Rockies can’t contain James Wood as they lose 4-3 in extra innings
Closing out their four-game series at Nationals Park, the Colorado Rockies battled through 11 innings against the Washington Nationals in a game that unfolded as a tense, back‑and‑forth duel that shattered Washington’s 11‑game losing streak—but at the expense of Colorado’s four‑game winning streak. James Wood powered the Nationals to a 4-3 victory, preventing the Rockies’ second sweep of the year.
Rockies rookie Chase Dollander took the mound and held steady early, but he surrendered a two‑run homer to Nationals phenom James Wood. Wood launched a two‑run shot to center on a 1‑0 count, giving Washington a 2–0 edge. The Rockies responded swiftly in the 5th inning. Orlando Arcia singled and advanced to third after a misplay by second baseman Luis García Jr. Jordan Beck ripped an RBI double, then Mickey Moniak followed with another single to tie it up 2–2.
Dollander and Nats starter Trevor Williams dueled through six innings. Williams lasted 5⅓ innings, giving up two runs on eight hits, and Dollander allowed six hits and two runs in six innings — both earned a quality start. Later innings saw clean work from each bullpen. Colorado’s relievers were sharp, though they couldn’t scratch another run. Washington’s pen also shut out the Rockies after the 6th until extras
Michael Toglia kept the Rockies’ hopes alive, delivering an RBI single to give Colorado a 3–2 lead in the top of the 11th. He also dazzled defensively, cutting down a Nats runner on a bunt with a smooth play at first.
Colorado brought in closer Seth Halvorsen, aiming to seal the win, but manager Warren Schaeffer would later question the decision to pitch to Wood in such a pivotal moment. With two outs and a runner on third, Halvorsen let a splitter hang. Wood crushed it for a walk‑off, two‑run homer to center—in what turned out to be a 428‑foot blast—ending the contest at 4–3 and bringing emotional relief to Nationals fans. This was Wood’s second two‑homer game in as many days, pushing his season tally to 20 homers with 56 RBIs
The Rockies struck out 13 times and drew just two walks and while the pitching staff only struck out six batters, they didn’t allow a single walk. The road trip ends with a 4-3 record as Colorado has been playing better baseball of late. They had a strong series, highlighted by home runs, but the hits just weren’t coming on Thursday.
They will head back to Coors Field to open a three-game set against the Arizona Diamondbacks with Austin Gomber facing off against Arizona’s Zac Gallen.
