O’s Take the Series as Rockies Offense Falls Flat in Finale
The Colorado Rockies wrapped up their three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles with a whimper on Sunday afternoon, dropping the finale 5–1 at Camden Yards. A day after being shellacked 18–0 in one of the worst losses in franchise history, the Rockies were hoping for a spark. They got a flicker in the form of Warming Bernabel’s first big-league home run—but not much else.
Facing Orioles right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano, Colorado’s lineup was again stifled. Sugano carved through six innings of one-run ball, allowing just four hits and striking out eight while issuing two walks. He set the tone early, spotting his fastball and mixing in a sharp splitter that left Rockies hitters flailing.
Bernabel provided the lone highlight for Colorado in the second inning, taking Sugano deep to left field to tie the game at 1–1. It was the 23-year-old infielder’s first career home run in just his second major-league game and gave the Rockies a brief dose of optimism. That momentum, however, was short-lived.
In the bottom half of the second, Orioles outfielder Dylan Carlson punched a two-run single up the middle off Rockies starter Austin Gomber, reclaiming the lead for Baltimore. One inning later, Tyler O’Neill continued his torrid power stretch with a two-run homer to left-center—his third long ball in as many games—stretching the Orioles’ lead to 4–1.
Gomber labored through 4 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on four hits while striking out just two and allowing three walks. The loss dropped him to 0–5 on the season, and his ERA sits at 6.28. Though he managed to avoid the meltdown that plagued his fellow starters earlier in the series, it was another ineffective outing in what has become a lost season.
The Rockies had their chances to claw back into the game but were doomed by a familiar issue: failure to capitalize with runners in scoring position. Colorado went 0-for-7 in such situations and stranded eight runners on base. They struck out 12 times and drew just four walks.
Baltimore tacked on an insurance run in the eighth inning, when Gunnar Henderson reached on a walk, stole second, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch by reliever Jaden Hill.
The Rockies now head to Cleveland to begin a three-game series on Monday. Bradley Blalock takes the hill for Colorado while Slade Cecconi takes the hill for the Guardians.
