Goodman’s home run secures first series win for the Rockies
The Colorado Rockies secured a narrow 3–2 victory over the Miami Marlins at loanDepot Park on Tuesday, marking just the second time this season they have won consecutive games and bringing their season record to 11–50. This back-to-back success is a rare highlight in a challenging season for the Rockies, but the win also guaranteed the Rockies their first series win of the season, snapping a streak of 22 consecutive series losses dating back to September 16-18, 2024, against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The game was tightly contested, with both teams displaying strong pitching performances. The Rockies managed to edge out the Marlins, thanks in part to a go-ahead solo home run by Hunter Goodman in the eighth inning, his tenth of the season.
Starting pitcher Chase Dollander took the mound for the Rockies after spending 15 days on the injured list. The rust was quite evident for the young right-hander as he issued three walks over three innings. He ran into trouble in the third inning, giving up the two runs Miami scored in the game, but allowed just two hits on 59 pitches. The bullpen locked things down the rest of the way with strong multi-inning performances by Juan Mejia, Jimmy Herget, and Victor Vodnik. Seth Halvorsen secured his third save of the season with a perfect ninth inning. The Rockies’ pitching staff collectively held the Marlins to six hits and two runs.
Offensively, the Rockies tallied seven hits, with contributions from multiple players. In addition to Goodman’s home run, the team capitalized on opportunities to score, including an RBI single from Jordan Beck in the fifth to get the Rockies on the board and a sacrifice fly by Thairo Estrada to tie the game in the fifth. Their ability to execute in key moments proved crucial in securing the win.
For the Marlins, starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara pitched effectively through six innings, allowing just two runs on four hits with four strikeouts. The bullpen was also effective, save for the home runs surrendered by Anthony Bender in the eighth.
Even though the wins come against the struggling Marlins, it’s at least a positive step forward for the Rockies. Runs have been hard to come by, which is a major reason for their current record. Still, the pitching has been excellent, and the offense was able to do just enough to get a victory thanks to some timely hitting.
They aim for the series sweep on Wednesday, facing off against former Rockies Cal Quantrill. Kyle Freeland takes the mound for the Rockies.
