Feltner shines but Rockies drop extra inning affair in Kansas City
The Colorado Rockies suffered a heartbreaking 4–3 loss in 11 innings to the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium, despite a late-game rally that briefly gave them the lead.
The game was a pitchers’ duel for much of the night. Rockies starter Ryan Feltner delivered a strong performance, allowing just one run on three hits over seven innings while striking out four. His counterpart, Royals left-hander Kris Bubic, matched him with seven scoreless innings, six strikeouts, and no walks.
Kansas City broke the scoreless tie in the sixth inning when Drew Waters launched a solo home run to right-center field off Feltner. Waters continued to be a thorn in Colorado’s side, tripling in the eighth and scoring on a Kyle Isbel infield single, extending the Royals’ lead to 2–0 off of reliever Jaden Hill.
The Rockies’ offense had been dormant until the ninth inning. Down to their final out, they loaded the bases against Royals reliever Carlos Estévez, issuing three walks. Catcher Jacob Stallings then delivered a clutch three-run double to left field, giving Colorado a 3–2 lead and stunning the Kansas City crowd.
However, the Rockies couldn’t hold the lead. In the bottom of the ninth, Michael Massey hit a sacrifice fly off Seth Halvorsen, scoring Freddy Fermin to tie the game at 3–3.
The game remained deadlocked until the 11th inning as the Rockeis failed to capitalize on their scoring opportunities. With the bases loaded and no outs, Fermin singled to center off Rockies reliever Tyler Kinley, driving in the winning run and sealing a walk-off victory for the Royals.
The loss dropped the Rockies to 4–18 on the season, while the Royals improved to 10–14. The two teams will continue their series on Wednesday.CBSSports.com
