Diamondbacks’ Early Power Sinks Rockies in 8–2 Loss at Coors Field
The Colorado Rockies were unable to overcome an early offensive surge from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday night, falling 8–2 in the opener of their four-game series at Coors Field.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. set the tone in the top of the first inning with a three-run home run off Rockies starter Bradley Blalock. Arizona extended its lead in the second when Jose Herrera connected for a two-run homer, making it 5–0. Ketel Marte added further damage in the fourth inning with a two-run double, pushing the advantage to 7–0 in the bottom of the fourth.
Blalock struggled with command throughout his outing, allowing seven runs on six hits and four walks in just 3 2/3 innings. Reliever Anthony Molina entered in the fourth and gave up one run over 2 1/3 innings. Dugan Darnell and Nick Anderson each worked scoreless frames to close the game.
Arizona’s offense was backed by a strong performance from left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez, who held Colorado to one run on six hits over seven innings. Rodriguez struck out six and walked one while improving his record to 7–5.
Colorado’s scoring came exclusively via solo home runs. Kyle Farmer broke the shutout in the fifth inning with his sixth homer of the season, and Brenton Doyle added a solo shot in the ninth, his 18th of the year. The Rockies finished 0-for-1 with runners in scoring position. Both teams tallied nine hits, but Arizona’s were more impactful.
The series continues Friday night at Coors Field, with Colorado sending right-hander Tanner Gordon to the mound against Arizona’s Brandon Pfaadt. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. MT.
