Colorado’s Slide Continues in One-Sided Loss to Guardians
After a stellar victory on Monday night, the Colorado Rockies were met with a ruthless offensive onslaught from the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday, falling 10–4 in a game that was never particularly close.
Led by a pair of home runs from rookie slugger Kyle Manzardo, the Guardians jumped all over Rockies starter Tanner Gordon and never looked back. Cleveland plated seven runs in the first three innings, capitalizing on Colorado’s pitching inefficiency, poor defense, and general disarray. The Rockies, now 28–79 on the season, continue to flirt with infamy.
Gordon endured a nightmarish outing. The right-hander lasted only three innings, surrendering six earned runs on eight hits and committing a balk that allowed an early Guardians run to score. Cleveland’s aggressive approach at the plate overwhelmed Gordon from the start, with Brayan Rocchio and Gabriel Arias each delivering two-run singles in a second inning that effectively put the game out of reach.
Manzardo added a two-run home run in the third to cap the early scoring barrage. The 24-year-old first baseman wasn’t done, either—he tacked on a solo shot in the fifth, notching his second career multi-homer game and pushing his season total to 18. His offensive explosion was more than enough support for Guardians starter Logan Allen, who turned in a workmanlike seven-inning effort.
While Gordon was chased early, Allen cruised. The lefty worked through seven innings on 113 pitches. He scattered eight hits and allowed just two runs, striking out three and walking one. Though not overpowering, Allen effectively worked around traffic and induced key ground balls to strand Rockies baserunners throughout the afternoon.
The Guardians’ bullpen took over in the eighth with a comfortable lead and allowed just a late solo homer as the Rockies attempted to chip away at the deficit. To the Rockies’ credit, they showed some signs of life in the middle innings. Jordan Beck put Colorado on the board with a solo homer in the fourth, and Michael Toglia followed with another blast in the seventh. Kyle Farmer added a third solo shot in the ninth, but the long balls amounted to little more than cosmetic changes to an otherwise lopsided box score.
The Rockies will look to take the series on Wednesday with Kyle Freeland on the hill facing off against Kolby Allard.
