Colorado Rockies to select Kyle Karros
The Colorado Rockies are expected to call up their No. 5 prospect, third baseman Kyle Karros, from Triple-A Albuquerque to make his Major League debut on Friday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to a report from MLB.com’s Thomas Harding.
Drafted in the fifth round from UCLA in 2023, Karros, 23, is the son of Los Angeles Dodgers great Eric Karros. The young third baseman has risen quickly through the Rockies’ system after a spectacular two minor league seasons. In 2024, with the High-A Spokane Indians, Karros earned league MVP honors after slashing .311/.390/.485 with 15 home runs and 78 RBI. He was a key figure in helping lead the Indians to the league championship and also won a Minor League Gold Glove at third base.
This season, Karros has dealt with a few injuries but has spent the majority of the season in Double-A with the Hartford Yard Goats. In 55 games, he slashed .294/.399/.462 with four home runs while displaying impeccable plate discipline and contact skills. He earned a promotion to Triple-A just two weeks ago, where in 16 games he has slashed .306/.368/.500 with two home runs. Karros sports a unique batting stance, but it has helped him maintain excellent plate discipline and the ability to make contact. This season, he has drawn 40 walks against 58 strikeouts. His approach to hitting focuses on line drives that eventually lead to power strokes.
Since trading Ryan McMahon to the New York Yankees, the Rockies have left a void at third base. The plan was to have veteran Orlando Arcia, as well as Kyle Farmer, take the majority of reps at the hot corner. Rookie Warming Bernabel can play third base, but the Rockies have him entrenched at first base after sending Michael Toglia back down to Triple-A. Injuries have also hit the Rockies over the last few days. Arcia appeared to have injured his elbow after making contact on a swing. He reportedly had felt something on a throw the previous inning, but immediately left the game after the at-bat to get an MRI on his elbow.
Farmer is also better suited as a utility infielder and hasn’t quite brought much to the table offensively.
With the record where it is the Rockies have found it best to start sifting through the players they have in the system. Karros will be the 12th player to make his big league debut this season for the Rockies. The team will need to make room on the 40-man roster, though something concerning Arcia could be in play. Harding also reports that infielder Aaron Schunk is expected to be called up as well, meaning another spot on the 40-man would need to be opened up.
