Blue Jays Humiliate Rockies 20-1, Complete Coors Field Sweep
The Colorado Rockies hit rock bottom on Wednesday afternoon at Coors Field, suffering a brutal 20-1 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays to complete a three-game sweep. The defeat was the worst of the season for Colorado and capped a historically lopsided series in which they were outscored 45-6.
It was a game—and a series—defined by utter domination from the Blue Jays, whose offense broke records and left little doubt about the disparity between the two teams.
Toronto piled up 24 hits on the day, five of which left the yard, and set a Major League Baseball record with 63 hits over the three-game set. The offensive onslaught was led by Davis Schneider, who went 3-for-7 with two home runs and four RBIs. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. added four hits of his own, including a homer, and extended his on-base streak to 23 games. Bo Bichette, Ty France, and Ernie Clement all joined the hit parade with Bichette adding four hits including a home run while Clement had a homer as well.
In total, seven Blue Jays had multi-hit affairs They scored in five different innings, including a four-run sixth and an eight-run ninth that featured homers from Schneider and Clement—both off catcher Austin Nola, who pitched the final frame in an act of sheer damage control.
The Rockies’ lone bright spot came in the bottom of the first inning, when Ezequiel Tovar doubled home a run to briefly take a 1-0 lead. From there, Colorado was completely shut down. The team managed just three hits total, none after the fourth inning.
Kyle Freeland was roughed up for six runs on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings. He dropped to 2-12 on the season and now sports a 5.53 ERA. The bullpen didn’t fare any better, allowing 14 more runs over the final 4 1/3 innings, including the disastrous ninth inning that featured Nola on the mound.
On the other side, Kevin Gausman was in cruise control. The veteran right-hander tossed seven innings of one-run ball, allowing just three hits while striking out eight and walking two.
The Rockies now head to Arizona to begin a three-game series on Friday.
