Returning the Favor: Philadelphia Phillies Beat Cleveland Guardians 7-1
The Philadelphia Phillies bounced back from Friday’s 6-0 loss to the Cleveland Guardians.
Game 2 was a mirror image of the first game, except for Cleveland avoiding the shutout in a 7-1 loss on Saturday night.
Ranger Suarez was the star for the Phillies. He recently returned from a back injury and gave up seven runs in his first outing against Arizona.
Against the Guardians, Suarez delivered seven shutout innings. He gave up three hits and a walk while striking out five.
PLAYING THE ACE
Meanwhile, Cleveland ace Tanner Bibee was almost as sharp. He also pitched seven strong innings and retired the first 10 batters he faced.
The Phillies scored the first run of the game off Bibee in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Kyle Schwarber.
THE BIG BOOM
Unfortunately for Cleveland, the Phillies’ powerful bats finally emerged with a six-run outburst in the eighth inning.
Bryce Harper hit his seventh homer of the year, a 421-foot blast to center field off reliever Joey Cantillo.
Max Kepler increased the lead to 5-0 with a two-run double.
Guardians manager Stephen Vogt didn’t want to use the rest of his bullpen, so poor Cantillo stayed out there to give up RBI singles to Brandon Marsh and Eduardo Sosa.
The Guardians avoided the shutout when Carlos Santana’s sacrifice fly scored Gabriel Arias in the bottom of the ninth.
The series finale will be in the spotlight on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball at 7 p.m. Luis Ortiz (2-3) will start for Cleveland, while the Phillies will go with Zack Wheeler (3-1).
