Reese Olsen is Out For the Season.. What’s Next

The Detroit Tiger’s starting pitcher Reese Olsen will miss the remainder of the year with a strained shoulder. This announcement comes on the heel of a rock start where he pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up 6 hits, 5 earned runs, 2 of which came by way of home-run. Olsen had a IL stint earlier in the year due to inflammation on his right right finger, but the shoulder issue will land him on the 60-day. Olsen finishes the season with a 4-4 record and 3.15 ERA. The Tiger’s have recalled utility player Andy Ibanez in a corresponding move to the Olsen injury

Another reactionary move as a result of the loss, was trading for Minnesota Twin arms Robby Dobnak and Chris Paddock.   Detroit will be sending their #14 prospect, switch-hitting catcher Enrique Jimenez. He is 19 years of age and is playing Rookie Ball in the FCL league.

Paddock will assume Olsen’s role in the pitching rotation and make his Tiger debut on Wednesday. So far this year he is 3-9 with a 4.49 ERA in 111 innings pitched. He has a wide array of pitches and within his arsenal and attacks the zone quite well, but has struggled to avoid hard contact. Also, despite his ability to get hitters to chase outside of the zone he has been unable to punch out hitters at any type of consistency. The Tigers are hoping that he can eat up some innings down the stretch and be a serviceable arm every fifth day.

The other player involved in  the deal is 30 year old right hander Randy Dobnak who will report to Toledo. He has made one appearance at the Major League level, spending spending most of his time in Triple A with the St. Paul Saints. In 17 appearances, he has a 1-7 record with a 7.12 ERA, although in his career he has a over .500 record and a 3.88 earned run average.

Olsen now becomes the second Tiger’s Starting Pitcher who will be sideline for the year along with Jackson Jobe. Despite having another exceptional year on the pitcher’s mound, Olsen was unable to avoid several trips to the IL throughout the season for the second time in a row. Olsen is still only 25 years of age and has shown the potential to be a top-end arm in the rotation, but he is slowly building the reputation of being injury prone. The loss of Olson also presents an opportunity for their top pitching prospect Troy Melton do gets some looks. Coming off a rough debut against the Pittsburgh Pirates, he bounced back well going 7 scoreless innings in a win against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
