Red Sox Need to Rip Bandaid Off and Call up Anthony
We as Red Sox fans are stuck in mediocre purgatory. This team just has consistently been good at giving us mediocre .500 baseball to watch. This team has been .500 at Fenway Park ever since winning the World Series in 2018. They are now back to being a game under .500 and have found themselves in .500 territory more than any other team this season. To put the cherry on top of this .500 sundae, the Red Sox split a series with one of the worst teams in baseball and scored two runs in the final two games against the second worst pitching staff. It’s inexcusable at this point.
But if the Red Sox are going to continue to flirt with .500 baseball the least the front office can do is give the people what they want. Rip the band-aid off and call up Roman Anthony, it’s time.
The Time for Anthony is Now
The Red Sox are already stuck in this .500 whirlwind and they have ALOT of adversity to climb. Triston Casas had his knee blown out. Alex Bregman is on the IL and could be out longer than anticipated. Not to mention, Trevor Story is a lost puppy, both at the plate and in the field. Story is in the middle of a May that he wants to forget. He has 27 strikeouts and just two extra base hits and has seen his OPS drop below .600 and his 60 wRC+ puts him on pace to be the worst hitter in the sport. That’s not ideal.
What those three have in common is that they are the middle of the order bats. Those were three players that were to be relied on and before the injury Bregman was playing great and was playing MVP type baseball. Now that two are injured and one is essentially unplayable, the roster is now littered with young players.
The fact of the matter is, the Red Sox roster is filled with lots of young talent. In the wake of the Bregman injury, the Red Sox finally called up Marcelo Mayer, who has looked comfortable at third base and has also gotten his first MLB hit. This team also has Carlos Narvaez (who looks like a veteran behind the plate and at it), Kristian Campbell (who’s shown promise, but also having a rookie slump), and then sophomore players such as Wilyer Abreu and Ceddanne Rafaela. The point I am making is that the Red Sox are young and all of these guys are everyday players for the lineup. It’s not a bad thing per se, but they’ve leaned into the youth movement.
If the team is going to be giving us inconsistent .500 baseball, completely lean into the youth movement and bring up Roman Anthony. The Red Sox as an organization is one of the most profitable in the sport and they shouldn’t be willing to let him sit in Triple A just to manipulate the service time. Just give the people what they want and bring him to the show.
It’s not like Anthony is playing poorly or isn’t ready. He is more than ready. I am aware that his path is quite tough, but there are ways around it. Make Rafaela a utility player. Shift Duran to center. Or just rip that bandaid off and make a tough trade. Either way, bring up Anthony.
Anthony is hitting .321 and with a .971 OPS. His barrel rate is off the charts and his immense power would be a bright spot on the roster.
At this point, the Big Three should just be together in Boston. It’s wild to think he was the last one to be called up. But given the state of the franchise, there is no reason to not have him here.
Give the people what they want. Call him up.
