Rangers Start Second Half Strong With 2-0 Win Over MLB Best Tigers
If it feels like the Rangers always lose when they have a chance to get back to .500, that’s because they always do.
Entering play tonight, the Rangers were 0-7 with an opportunity to break even this season.
After seven scoreless innings in Friday night’s series opener against the Detroit Tigers, it looked like that seven could turn into an eight.
However, Corey Seager made sure that didn’t happen.
With two on and two out, Seager smacked a two-RBI double to put the only two runs of the night on the board, leading the Rangers to a 2-0 series and home stand opening win over the Tigers.
“A lot of these [low-scoring games] have gotten away from us, so it’s good to win one like this late in the ballgame,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said.
“To get that timely hit, the bullpen what a job they did, that’s what it takes to win a game like this is for the bullpen to step up, and they did tonight.
As Bochy mentioned, three Rangers relievers were lights out, following 5.2 shutout innings from Patrick Corbin to mark down the Rangers AL-best 10th shutout of the season.
With the effort, Corbin lowered his season ERA from 4.15 to 3.91, marking his lowest ERA after 18 starts in a season since a 3.34 mark in his first 18 starts in 2019 with the Nationals.
“I can’t tell you,” Bochy said when reflecting on where the team would be without Corbin’s efforts. “We’re not where we wanna be, but what a job he’s done all year. He’s been so consistent in giving this team a chance to win with his great starts. We needed someone to put zeros up today, and he did it. He’s a pro, he’s fun to watch, he’s prepared, he makes adjustments out there, he kept them off balance a little bit, he’s got four pitches that he can command on both sides of the plate.
It’s not lost on anyone that the season hasn’t gone the way that the Rangers have wanted it to, but to say they can’t turn it around would be foolish, and that’s not lost on anyone.
“You gotta get to .500 before you can get over it,” Bochy said. “It’s good for these guys. We’re doing some good things here offensively, tonight we didn’t score a lot of runs, but when you get to that mark and keep losing that one game to get you to it, these guys should feel good about it”.
