Rangers Likely To Need Pitching Move, Cole Winn The Obvious Choice

The Texas Rangers have not had the greatest fortune when it comes to relief pitchers the last few days.

On Monday, Luke Jackson entered the game in the 9th inning with the Rangers leading the Rockies 2-1.

Jackson’s first pitch was a 111 MPH line drive off the bat of Ryan McMahon that struck the Texas closer right in the hand.

Before the game on Tuesday, Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said the Rangers were unsure whether or not a move would need to be made because the swelling had gone down significantly.

However, that was before a near copy-and-paste situation happened in the 9th inning of Tuesday’s game.

With Jackson unavailable, it was Chris Martin who came on in the 9th to try and earn a save while pitching for a third straight day.

After throwing just one pitch, Martin left the game with what Bruce Bochy described as “elbow tightness”. Martin will be evaluated before Wednesday’s game.

No matter what the news is with regards to Martin, the Rangers will almost certainly need to make a move for a reliever to get some bullpen coverage.

When looking at potential options, Cole Winn stands out above the rest. In 23.1 IP with AAA Round Rock this season, Winn has yet to allow an earned run.

Last season, Winn got a cup of coffee at the big league level, pitching in 13 games with a 7.79 ERA.

Similarly, to what he’s done at the minor league level this season, Winn went five outings before allowing a run with the Rangers last season.

Originally, the Rangers drafted Winn in the first round of the 2018 draft to be a starter, but after struggles at the minor league level, he has transitioned to the bullpen.

If Winn is in fact called up this afternoon, it will make a chance for him to finally sement himself at the big league level.

Depending on the severity of Martin’s injury, the Rangers will need someone else to step up and make a significant impact in the bullpen.

That person could finally be the one who Texas always thought would make an impact on their MLB team.
