Rangers Can’t Get Bats Going In 2-1 Loss To Blue Jays

Oftentimes, a big 9th inning rally to win a game can spark a team’s offense and help them go on a run.

Looking for any sort of momentum, the Rangrs hoped that would be the case following their 5-4 victory on the southside against the White Sox on Sunday.

Unfortunately, that did not come to fruition as Texas managed just one run on five hits (four singles) in a 2-1 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays at Globe Life Field on Monday afternoon.

Blue Jays starter Kevin Gausman shut down the Rangers offense, turning in eight innings, allowing just the one run while throwing 96 pitches, outdueling Jacob deGrom, who took the mound for Texas, throwing 5.1 innings, allowing both Toronto runs.

ā€œIt’s what we thought this game would be, a tight ballgame [with] two really, really good pitchers,ā€ Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said.

ā€œWe just couldn’t find a way to get another run there, didn’t create a lot of traffic, just missing a hit there. I thought Jacob was good, there guy [Gausman] was really good, pitching really efficiently and pounding the strike zone, he’s got that split, slider, and of course that good fastball that he locates well, he was on top of his gameā€.

The Rangers lone run came in the 4th when Wyatt Langford blasted a solo home run into the left field seats off the bat at 113.1 MPH. That exit velocity was the highest in Langford’s young career.

In the 5th, the Rangers had another chance to score as they led off the inning with back-to-back singles via Jonah Heim and Alejandro Osuna, who flipped his first big league hit into center as part of a multi-hit effort.

However, after that, Adolis Garcia struck out, Marcus Semien flied out to right, and Sam Haggerty struck out, completing what ended up being the Rangers best threat the rest of the afternoon.

As for deGrom, his line of 5.1 IP, 5 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, and 0 strikeouts marked the first time in his big league career that he did not record a strikeout.

Following a heavy workload in his last two starts, the Rangers wanted to lighten deGrom’s workload this time through the rotation.

Still, deGrom admits he was dealing with the issue of ā€œflying open,ā€ which he has been battling since before the season started.

ā€œI feel good,ā€ deGrom said. ā€œI was just fighting myself flying open, it’s something I’ve been working on almost every start, and today it kinda took a step in the wrong direction, so I wasn’t able to really locate down and pitch off that with my slider. They had some good takes off my sliders, I’d throw it off the plate every once in a while, but I was never able to throw a fastball where I wanted to, so that part was really frustratingā€.

The Rangers bullpen came in and combined for 3.2 scoreless frames as Jacob Webb, Hoby Milner, and Cole Winn combined to hold the Jays off the board for the rest of the night.

However, the question that remains is one that seems to have existed without a solution throughout the 2025 season.

Where will the offense come from?
