Rangers Beat By Marte Again, Allow 4 In 9th In Crushing 6-4 Loss To D-Backs
In sports, there are losses, there are frustrating losses, and then there are straight-up gut-wrenching losses.
Last night’s Rangers loss would probably go in the frustrating category after Texas managed just one hit in six innings off the Arizona bullpen.
This afternoon’s loss, no doubt, goes into the gut-wrenching category.
One out away from the win, Ketel Marte launched a game-winning three-run home run to break the Rangers hearts for a second straight night.
After holding the lead for the entire game, the Rangers fell short in a tough 6-4 series-clinching defeat at the hands of the D-Backs on Wednesday afternoon at Globe Life Field.
“It just got away from us there in the ninth,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said. “That’s a tough one, to be two outs in the ninth, those are always tough, it stings when you lose the way we did today”.
The Rangers put themselves in a golden position to win from the jump today, taking the lead in the first inning thanks ot Evan Carter, who laced an RBI single in his first AB back from the IL.
Even when Arizona tied the game in the 3rd, the Rangers responded with a pair of runs in the 4th on a two-run home run from Jake Burger.
Texas starter Merrill Kelly made that home run stand up as he faced his former team for the first time and put forth a quality bounce-back effort, going six innings, allowing just two runs.
“It was cool, I’m glad it’s over,” Kelly said after the game. “It was fun seeing the guys in the box. It’s obviously a very different vantage point, I’m used to seeing them in the dugout, but kinda what I expected, a little anxiety leading up to the game, but once the game starts, I still gotta execute.
Kelly’s strong effort, combined with a huge insurance run off the bat of Josh Jung in the 8th, set the Rangers up in a perfect position to win the game.
Phil Maton was on the mound going for a four-out save as he cruised through the first two batters, striking out both.
Then, Maton lost his command, hitting Blaze Alexander and walking Geraldo Predomo, setting up the big Marte home run.
With the loss, the Rangers fall back to .500 at 61-61 as they stare down a road trip to Toronto and Kansas City.
“We’re men, we gotta bounce back,” Bochy said. “Sure, it’s not the home stand we were hoping to have, but in this game, you gotta be resilient”.
