Raiders Training Camp Questions: The New-Look Secondary

Welcome to this Las Vegas Raiders training camp segment! We will dive into the positions and dive into questions heading into training camp. It’s truly crazy that football is right around the corner and feels like yesterday that the season ended. Today we end the series with the secondary. Let’s go ball hawking.

What this Secondary Can Be

The Raiders said goodbye to Nate Hobbs and to be honest it was the right move. I was a big fan of Hobbs, but at that price point no thanks. Also, the Raiders said goodbye to Trevon Moehrig, who was a very strong run defender at the safety position. This is now a completely revamped and remodeled secondary, which is a position that has had its question marks over the years. One day we will have our next Charles Woodson.

One thing is for certain, this secondary is a Pete Carroll type of secondary. They are big and they are physical and that’s going to be something to monitor as we move forward into camp.

One of the better things to watch for and monitor is Darien Porter, who was taken in the third round out of Iowa State in this past draft. Can he emerge as a legitimate piece to this defense at the cornerback position?

It’s very reminiscent of the linebacker position, where the Raiders are taking a chance on Eric Stokes. Injuries have hampered him in his career, but there is high reward potential here.

My biggest thing is Jeremy Chinn. The hard hitting physical safety is a very low risk high reward potential for the Raiders. We’ve seen him line up in the slot as a corner, but he is better suited as a safety.

End of the day, this secondary position has as many concerns as the linebacker position. There are concerns, but it comes with the element of surprise.

As a raiders fan, I am very much ready for the element of surprise.
