The Raiders Should Check in on Jaire Alexander

This Raiders offseason has been nothing short of impressive. They’ve made all the right moves and have pushed the right buttons. It genuinely feels good as a fan to see them make the right football decisions. They hired the right coach, the right personnel, and the right guy to manage. It’s a great recipe for further success.

When it’s come down to adding to the roster, they’ve drafted well, but we’re a bit quiet in free agency. They’ve added depth, but if they want to add a player that could be a boost the team should check in on Jaire Alexander.

His name did surface when it came down to trade talks. Ultimately, the Packers decided to just release Alexander entirely after failing to find a trade partner. Ironically, they signed former Raiders cornerback Nate Hobbs and he now occupies the position that Alexander once played.

Credit to the Raiders for adding depth to the linebacker position. Taking a flyer on former Cowboy Jaylon Smith is fine and John Spytek reuniting for Devin White is intriguing. His play has declined, but if he can be at least half of what he was in Tampa Bay, that softens the blow of losing Robert Spillane. They should do this with their secondary.

Even though the Raiders like their secondary, it could use some seasoning and additions. Damien Porter will likely play a key role this season, but adding a veteran like Alexander would be enormous.

Alexander, when healthy is one of the better corners out there. He can hang with just about any wide receiver and cover them well. This is a Pro-Bowl cornerback and a guy who has also been named to the Second-Team All-Pro twice. A nice perk is that he is just 28 years old, but it does come with some concerns.

Alexander has had some health concerns, which is a huge reason that the Packers moved on. Best ability is availability, and this is a player that has played just 14 games combined the last two seasons. Is the juice worth the squeeze? I think it is despite the concerns.

This cornerback room is young. Adding a veteran to help stabilize things and help that area of the defense could pay enormous dividends. If he is healthy, it’s a slam dunk of a signing and would be the cherry on top of what’s been a successful winter.

2022 was his best season, and if he could be anywhere near that level, that’s huge for the Raiders. Mentorship is also a real thing and he could be a huge addition in that regard. The health should be concerning, but they also took a chance on Eric Stokes, who’s been injury prone as well.

End of the day I think the Raiders cornerback situation is something that will get addressed eventually. Heck, worst comes to worst, call the Dolphins about Jalen Ramsey.

If not, Alexander is a free signing that would be a base salary of $18.2 million.
