Why there is no need to rush the Browns rookie QBs

In the 3rd thru 5th rounds of the 2025 NFL draft that was held on the weekend of April 24th ,2025, the Cleveland Browns changed their quarterback room for the foreseeable future. In the third round and 93rd pick of that draft the Cleveland Browns selected Dillon Gabriel quarterback from the University of Oregon. He was an unexpected pick for the Browns because hardly anyone had him mocked or projected to the Browns. In the 5th round of that same draft with the 144th pick the Cleveland Browns traded up to select quarterback Shedeur Sanders from the University of Colorado. Sanders was the one of the most spotlighted players in the 2025 NFL Draft. And his fall from the projection of the first round was the story of the draft. Now both his and Dillon Gabriel’s stories continue with the Cleveland Browns.

On June 12th ,2025, the Cleveland Browns wrapped their mandatory minicamp before their full training camp begins at the end of July. The story coming out of the minicamp and prior OTAs (organized team activities) was how accurate Shedeur Sanders was with his throws in practice. His ability to make completions in shorts and helmets makes him the Browns starting quarterback and future of this organization. Dillon Gabriel has also been effective in practice and is well spoken in post practice interviews. In the era of social media and Tik Tok videos people and fans have collectively lost their minds.

I am not at all saying that neither of these two quarterbacks will be good or bad, I think it is way too early to tell either way. Let’s get a look at them in regular season game action before we can get them inducted into Canton Ohio. It is still June, and fans are eager to watch football again and most of them can hardly wait for the season to start.  That is why we see the reaction to practice videos in the summer. People need to pump the brakes when it comes to young quarterbacks especially rookie quarterbacks.

In the NFL an average player is considered to very good in college football. And very few rookie quarterbacks make the production leap in their first NFL season. Washington’s Jayden Daniels is the exception to this principle. Putting high expectations on any rookie based on practice video is unfair and unproductive. This is because they are probably going to struggle at some early point in their NFL career. And those same fans will turn on them for not meeting those expectations. Everyone should just relax and let the development process play out to completion by not rushing it. Please remember maturity itself is a process and not an arrival.
