The Browns New Advantage When They Play in the Dome
On Christmas Eve in 2022 the Cleveland Browns hosted the New Orleans Saints in four-degree temperature and negative ten-degree wind chill at kickoff. The Saints defeated the Browns 17-10 in that game. The Browns had opportunities to tie the game, but three potentially game tying touchdown passes were dropped in the endzone. Amari Cooper, David Njoku, and Donovan Peoples Jones each dropped the potentially game tying touchdown passes in the last two minutes of the game. The frigid game conditions should have been an advantage for the Browns in that game, but the scoreboard did not reflect that. The main argument against their new dome stadium plans is that the Browns would lose the cold weather advantage at home. But with the dome and itβs designed architecture the Browns would gain a new advantage at home.
The current Huntington Bank Field opened with the expansion Browns in 1999. Like the team the stadium was constructed in a rush. The stadium was obsolete when the gates opened in 1999. The design was flawed as well. Much of the crowd noise from Browns fans escapes the stadium. That will change with the new home of the Cleveland Browns in 2029.
Lead Architect of the HKS Group Lance Evans is the designer of the new enclosed Huntington Bank Field explained in a recent interview that the design of the stadium is to echo the crowd noise. It will be the opposite effect from the current outdoor stadium. Evans said that the new Huntington Bank Field will be the loudest stadium in world. So, while the Browns could give up a home weather advantage they would gain a crowd noise advantage. The best advantage is to have the better players than the visiting team. And by having a better team would be the ultimate measure of success for the new stadium.
