MPJ Out, Cam Johnson and Bruce Brown In for the Denver Nuggets
After no movement in the draft and only small two-way pickups, Nuggets Nation has been waiting days to see what Tenzer cooks up in free agency. Let’s just say that one started off with a BANG for the Denver Nuggets. Another blockbuster trade that was heard league-wide involved the Nuggets trading Michael Porter Jr. and an unprotected first-round pick in the 2032 NBA Draft to the Brooklyn Nets as part of a deal for Cameron Johnson.
This was a much-needed move as MPJ’s was too much and he was underperforming in key playoff games. However, let us not forget his contributions in helping us win in 2023, he will be missed. This was a much-needed move, as MPJ’s contract was simply too much for his level of production, especially considering his struggles in key playoff moments. That said, Nuggets fans won’t forget his role in helping bring the title home in 2023, he will be missed. However, what the Nuggets are getting in return is more than worth it. Cameron Johnson, is a proven All-Star, who built a reputation as a two-way force in Brooklyn, often serving as the defensive anchor and key facilitator on a team that lacked consistency. Now, imagine what he can do in Denver’s system, surrounded by elite talent.
He’ll fit in great with Jokic leading the offence. He’s a good shooter, making about 39% of his three-pointers, and he moves well without the ball. Which is perfect for a team that passes a lot and spaces the floor. He’s way better on defense than Porter, and he’s a more steady defender. Plus, he’s usually healthy, so Denver can rely on him during the playoffs. Also, by trading Michael Porter Jr. for Cameron Johnson, the Nuggets are projected to save $37 million in cap space over the next two seasons, by trading Michael Porter Jr.’s $79 million remaining contract for Cameron Johnson’s $42 million deal. This helps bring financial flexibility for future roster moves and potential contract extensions like Jokic’s big one coming up.
In other important news, that happened today the Nuggets brought back Bruce Brown, champion with the team in 2023, a fan-favourite who is being brought back on a one-year contract. Brown is exactly what the Nuggets need off the bench he plays hard, and comes up big in important moments. With him back, the second team will play better defence, and he knows how everything works. He can guard different positions, make plays, and score in transition.
Ultimately today was a day Nuggets fans will remember forever, it shows a big move to try and shake things up for the Nuggets to continue to stay competitive without ruining their future, and with Bruce Brown back and more money to spend, Denver should keep doing well in the West and hopefully bring another one back to the 5280.
