Pittsburgh Pirates: Its Time To Promote Cam Devanney
The Pittsburgh Pirates’ season is over. They are wasting their time playing veterans on one-year deals. Its time to call up Cam Devanney and see what he is capable of doing on the big league level.
The Pittsburgh Pirates traded for SS, Cam Devanney back on July 16th for 2B, Adam Frazier. Devanney was immediately optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis where he has spent all of his time since being acquired. Devanney was drafted back in 2019 by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 15th round of the MLB Draft. On December 14th 2023, the Brewers shipped him to the Kansas City Royals in a three player trade that involved RHP, Taylor Clarke going to the Brewers in exchange for Devanney and RHP, Ryan Brady.
Cam Devanney has spent the past 3 and half years playing triple-a ball and has put up some good numbers. In 4 total seasons, he is slashing .266/.354/.478 with 52 home runs 78 doubles, and 6 triples. He has a career OPS of .832 at the highest level of minor league baseball. His numbers will not amaze you, but this year he has played well enough for a promotion. This season he is slashing .272/.369/.530 with 19 home runs on the season. Again, the numbers aren’t anything to get too excited about for a player that is now 28 years of age and has seen pitching at this level, but he does have a few things going for him.
Cam Devanney plays at a premium position and he plays it very well. In his minor league career, Devanney has played shortstop in 396 games where he has a .962 fielding percentage in 6 seasons. Since joining the Pittsburgh Pirates system, he has played shortstop in 68.1 innings with 13 putouts, 21 assists and has a 1.000 fielding percentage with a few web gems to show for.

Devanney does have some flaws to his game. He has strikeout rate of 23.4%, a whiff rate of 33.6%, and a zone-contact rate of only 77.53% on the season. These are well below average numbers especially for someone that has been in AAA for multiple years. He does however have some intriguing metrics this season that could potentially help him at the big league level. His barrel percentage is at 16.5%Â and his hard hit rate is at 46.5% on the season. With his power and his exceptional defense, its worth the shot for the Pirates to promote him and let him play the rest of the year with the big league club.
