MLB To Test ABS During All-Star Game
Baseball fans who enjoyed the Automatic Ball Strike system during Spring Training won’t have to wait as long as they thought to see it back in action.
On Wednesday afternoon, MLB announced that it will be using ABS during next week’s 95th annual All-Star Game in Atlanta.
Both the AL and NL will be given two challenges, with the ability to retain them if they continue to answer the challenges correctly.
Just the pitcher, batter, and catcher can tap their head, prompting a technology review of an umpire’s made ball or strike call.
MLB used the system in Spring Training, and according to officials, 72% of polled fans say ABS “positively” impacted their experiance.
69% of fans said they think ABS should be part of the game moving forward, and just 10% had negative feelings about the system.
Those 69% just may be getting what they ordered, as MLB could implement ABS into regular and postseason play as soon as next season.
Later this summer, MLB’s competition committee will meet and likely approve the system to be instituted next season.
