MLB Announces Return Of Players Weekend Seemingly Without Nickname Jerseys
On Wednesday morning, Major League Baseball announced the return of Players Weekend for a second consecutive year.
After a four-year hiatus, MLB brought back Players Weekend in 2024 after its popularity with fans and players alike from 2017-2019.
2025’s rendition of Players Weekend will take place August 15th-17th, with the weekend concluding at the Little League Classic, which will take place at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, as the Mets take on the Mariners.
Unfortunately, once again, the widely popular special Players Weekend jerseys do not seem to be returning in 2025. From 2017-2019, MLB players got the opportunity to wear their nickname on the back of a special jersey.
However, special on-field swag will be back as players will be able to express themselves through custom bats and cleats not normally allowed within MLB’s uniform guidelines. Players will also wear jersey number patches on their caps as they did last season.
MLB will once again shine a light on three central themes to allow fans to get to know players on a better level.
“Off-Field interests”, “Causes”, and “Appreciation” will once again be highlighted by MLB and its players.
Fans will also have an opportunity to get their hands on some of the Players Weekend gear as players will be able to auction off their bats and cleats to benefit charities of their choice.
Last season, MLB saw 74.5 million total impressions and 2.4 million engagements on social media while registering a 30% boost in MLB-related conversation compared to the same timeframe in ’23.
MLB is already seeing success on the business side of things as the league’s inaugural Rivalry Weekend was the most attended pre-Memorial Day weekend in 13 years.
