The first big splash of the trade deadline has been made. The Seattle Mariners have acquired Josh Naylor from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Going to the Diamondbacks are pitching prospects Brandyn Garcia and Ashton Izzi. This is a huge move for the Mariners, who fill a huge need and void in their lineup.

Mariners Finally Land a Bat

Finally. The Mariners front office did the unthinkable. They traded for a bat. Sure, it’s a rental, but this team needed a bad desperately and finally gave this fan base something to rejoice about. They have arguably the best pitching staff in baseball, but their offense is lackluster in comparison towards it.

Cal Raleigh is enjoying an MVP type season and Julio Rodriguez is still a threat at the plate. Even though they’ve seen a step up offensively this season, the Mariners need more offense, especially pushing for the playoffs.

Naylor is enjoying a really nice season while hitting in the Diamondbacks lethal offense. He is hitting .292 and with a .807 OPS. Not only is the Mariners offense starving for a legitimate bat to help impact them offensively, but Naylor easily becomes the most productive first baseman they’ve had this season. They’ve already DFA’d Rowdy Tellez, whom is now with the Texas Rangers and there is just a clear fit and need for him in their lineup.

Naylor brings immense power, as he has 11 home runs this season. I love this love for the Mariners and they also aren’t done. Reports are coming in that even though they landed Naylor, they are still in talks with the Diamondbacks on a reunion with third baseman Eugenio Suarez. Talk about power. That move would be a power flex to the rest of the American League, as they look to push for the playoffs.
