Manchester United Announces Plan For New $2.5 Billion Stadium
Manchester United just announced that they will be shooting themselves to the forefront when it comes to sports stadiums.
On Tuesday, United announced plans to build a brand new $2.5 billion stadium with a targeted completion date by the 2030-2031 season.
For the last 115 years, United has played at Old Trafford, which will be demolished once the new stadium is ready.
According to sources, United contemplated renovating Old Trafford or even keeping it as a home for women’s and youth league games but ultimately decided against it.
“Today marks the start of an incredibly exciting journey to the delivery of what will be the world’s greatest football stadium, at the centre of a regenerated Old Trafford,” co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe said on Tuesday.
United’s new home will seat up to 100,000 fans, surpassing Wembley Stadium as the biggest in the U.K.
Architect Norman Foster designed the stadium with a “vast umbrella” canopy supported by three tall masts, making it visible from up to 40 kilometers away.
The new stadium will not just be good for football fans but also for the people of the United Kingdom.
United’s new project is expected to create over 90,00 jobs as well as bringing in 17,000 new homes in the area.
CEO Omar Berrada has admitted the club “risk” falling further behind their rivals while they invest in the project.
However, in the long run, United is looking for a shakeup after recent struggles from such a historic side.
In three of the last four seasons, the Red Devils have finished outside the top five in the Premier League.
This season, United currently sits in 14th place with just 34 points and 9 wins at the time of this writing.
