Luis Ortiz Strikes Out 10 Athletics in Cleveland Guardians Victory
The Cleveland Guardians haven’t had a spectacular season, but it’s safe to say that the Andres Gimenez trade has gone their way.
Gimenez is batting .191 for the Toronto Blue Jays, while Luis Ortiz has emerged as a solid member of the Guardians’ starting rotation.
Ortiz (4-8) racked up 10 strikeouts in six innings last night as the Guardians beat the Athletics 4-2 in Sacramento, Calif.
SECOND-INNING PARTY
Cleveland scored all four of its runs in the second inning.
Bo Naylor hit a double, and a throwing error by A’s second baseman Luis Urias allowed Nolan Jones to score.
Johnathan Rodriguez also doubled to score Naylor. Steven Kwan singled home Rodriguez to increase the lead to 3-0.
Jose Ramirez completed the rally with a single to score Kwan. Ramirez has reached 900 RBI for his career.
All of this damage came at the expense of A’s starter Mitchell Spence (2-2).
By contrast, Ortiz gave up only two hits and two walks in six shutout innings.
HANG ON FOR THE WIN
Sacramento has some great young hitters, and it’s hard to keep their bats under control for the entire game.
Cade Smith pitched the seventh for the Guardians and gave up an RBI single to Austin Wynns.
Max Muncy added a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning off Hunter Gaddis to cut Cleveland’s lead to 4-2.
Wait a minute. When did Max Muncy get traded to the A’s?
He didn’t. The more famous Max Muncy is still playing third base for the Los Angeles Dodgers, but the A’s have their own third baseman with the same name.
Fortunately for the Guardians, Emmanuel Clase pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his 17th save. Clase lowered his ERA to 3.58.
The Guardians will wrap up their visit to Sacramento today at 4:05 p.m. Slade Cecconi (2-3) will start for Cleveland against JP Sears (5-6) for the Athletics.
