Lost Players Weekend: Atlanta Braves Sweep Cleveland Guardians

The recent Players Weekend allowed major leaguers to show off their personalities.

They wore nicknames on their jerseys and used customized bats and shoes.

Hopefully, the Cleveland Guardians had a good time, because they lost all three games to the Atlanta Braves.

The Guardians banged out 10 hits on Sunday after scoring just one run in the first two games combined, but they still lost 5-4 at Progressive Field.

There’s no shame in losing to the Braves, despite their 56-68 record. With five wins in a row, they are finally playing up to their potential after an injury-riddled season.

The Braves loaded the bases in the second inning and scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by Nacho Alvarez Jr.

STRANGE SACRIFICE FLY

The Guardians’ offense got going in the third inning. Kyle Manzardo hit a sacrifice fly, but he was safe at first.

Left fielder Jurickson Profar was so eager to throw out Steven Kwan at the plate that he dropped the ball. Kwan scored to tie the game.

Bo Naylor (pictured) hit a double to score Daniel Schneemann, giving Cleveland a 2-1 lead. Naylor had four hits to pump up his batting average to … (checks notes) .184?

Schneemann, nicknamed “The Snowman,” hit a two-run triple to put the Guardians ahead 4-1 in the fourth inning.

He also made an amazing play in the fifth inning at third base. He dove into foul territory to stop a ground ball and threw out the runner at first.

COSTLY ERROR

Cleveland starter Logan Allen gave up two runs in the fifth, but it wasn’t all his fault. Angel Martinez made a throwing error at second base to let in a run.

Ozzie Albies singled to cut the deficit to 4-3.

Profar blasted a two-run homer in the sixth inning off Nic Enright (2-1) to put the Braves in the lead.

The Braves bullpen pitched five scoreless innings, as Raisel Iglesias recorded his 243rd career save.

LATE-NIGHT BASEBALL

The Guardians will visit the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight at 9:40 Eastern time.

Gavin Williams (7-4, 3.38 ERA) will start for Cleveland against Zac Gallen (9-12, 5.31).
