Lock the Door: Red Sox Steal Home Again in 13-3 Rout of Cleveland Guardians
Committing four errors in one game doesn’t often lead to success. Letting the opponent steal home – again – doesn’t help, either.
All of these calamities befell the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday. The Boston Red Sox prevailed 13-3 to win the three-game series.
Boston right fielder Rob Refsnyder homered in the second inning off Logan Allen (2-1). Cleveland’s Angel Martinez committed a throwing error to let in another run.
The Red Sox used sacrifice flies in the fourth and fifth to extend their lead to 4-0.
The Sox scored four more times in the fifth. Kristian Campbell hit a two-run double to send Allen to the showers.
NOT AGAIN!
Paul Sewald came in to pitch for Cleveland, and Boston’s Romy Gonzalez stole home. Jarren Duran pulled off the trick one day earlier.
Ceddanne Rafaela’s hit an RBI ground-rule double to finish the barrage in the fifth. Rafael Devers homered in the sixth to increase Boston’s lead to 9-0.
IT’S ABOUT TIME
Cleveland fans finally got something to cheer about when Nolan Jones crushed a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth.
Rafaela got those three runs back in the seventh with a homer to put Boston up 12-3. Duran finished the scoring with an RBI double in the ninth.
Facing a long stretch of games without a day off, Guardians manager Stephen Vogt preserved his bullpen by letting catcher Austin Hedges pitch the ninth inning.
Cleveland will begin a four-game home series against the Minnesota Twins tonight at 6:10 p.m. Gavin Williams (2-1) will start for Cleveland, while the Twins will go with Bailey Ober (2-1).
