Legendary Pro Wrestler Hulk Hogan Has Passed Away

It doesn’t feel real. No seriously, it doesn’t feel real. The thought of the ‘Immortal’ Hulk Hogan passing away, after having such a “larger than life” persona all of these years, feels like a nightmare that will not end.

But sadly, it is true; the great Hulk Hogan passed away today at the age of 71 at his home in Clearwater, FL.

Hogan, who’s real name was Terry Bollea, has been a major fixture in the wrestling industry for the longest time. In the 1980s, he was a pivotal cog in the wheel that was the WWF; helping to make the sport mainstream during a time when it needed a good kick in the butt. He was one of the most important names in the business, with people making the argument that there would be no WWE without the Hulkster.

He was Vince McMahon’s biggest draw for the longest time, main eventing eight of the first nine Wrestlemania’s for the company. His bout at Mania 1 with Mr. T vs. Roddy Piper and Paul Orndoff was obviously electric in the moment. The inaugural event with the biggest faces in show business in the main event? You just can’t beat that!

But…..that fails in comparison to WrestleMania 3, when ‘Hulkamania’ RAN WILD all over the Pontiac Silverdome against Andre The Giant. He had the 80,000 ‘Hulkamaniacs’ ON THEIR FEET, as he slammed the 500 lb GIANT on his back in the center of that ring.

He knew how to move the needle wherever he went, and that was CERTAINLY the case when he left Vince McMahon’s three-ring circus for the competitor; World Championship Wrestling. With Ted Turner’s company, he was able to turn the wrestling world on his head ONCE AGAIN…..by making the biggest “heel turn” in the history of the business.

The 2-time Hall of Famer helped to blend wrestling into pop-culture, putting the companies that he worked for on his back as he made his rounds through movies, television, and product placements. It didn’t matter if it was Rocky 3 (which was EASILY his best movie moment), No Holds Barred, Mr. Nanny, or 3 Ninjas: High Noon at Mega Mountain (underrated movie); Hulk Hogan’s presence put butts in seats, and kept ticket printers printing.

He was beloved by so many people, both in the wrestling business as well as outside of it. When the news of his passing came to light across the media, wrestlers of the past and the present all came together on social media to pay tribute to the legend;

“Mr. America” was a big part of all of our lives. As a child of the 90s and the 2000s, I think it’s safe to say that if it wasn’t for Hulk……I wouldn’t be a fan to this day. He is professional wrestling, he was professional wrestling, and he will forever be professional wrestling.

Thank you Hulk for everything that you gave to the business. Hope you are resting in paradise with the rest of the fellas up there.

But in the end, as always……what do I know? I’m just a guy from the Midwest, with a beer and a laptop, trying to make sense of this world.
