King of the Ring Flashback: Is This the Worst WWE Pay-Per-View of All Time? (1995)

Why build a pay-per-view around Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker when you can make Savio Vega into a hero in one night?

That must have been the thinking behind King of the Ring 1995, widely regarded as one of the worst pay-per-views ever.

It was also the last World Wrestling Federation pay-per-view I purchased – not because it was bad, but I finally realized that I didn’t have any money.

MEET SAVIO VEGA

Savio Vega was the star of the show, wrestling four times in one night. He was a big star in Puerto Rico and wrestled for several months in the WWF under a mask as Kwang.

He had rescued Razor Ramon from an attack by Jeff Jarrett and The Roadie at the first In Your House pay-per-view one month earlier.

Vega wrestled on the pre-show against Irwin R. Shyster, with the winner replacing the injured Razor in the King of the Ring tournament. Vega won the match.

Razor was in Vega’s corner for the opening match on the pay-per-view, as Vega defeated the 600-pound Yokozuna by countout.

OFF THE RAILS

The Roadie won his first-round match over Bob “Spark Plug” Holly. Then the next two matches threw the show into a tailspin.

Shawn Michaels battled “The Supreme Fighting Machine” Kama to a 15-minute draw. Instead of wowing us with great matches, Michaels’ night was over. Kama would later be known as The Godfather.

Then, The Undertaker lost to Mabel of all people, thanks to interference from Kama.

Vega beat Roadie in the semifinal, but Mabel won the crown with a victory over Vega, who had to be exhausted at this point in the night.

King Mabel got a WWF title shot at Summerslam 95, but he lost to Diesel.

OTHER MATCHES

Speaking of Diesel, he teamed with Bam Bam Bigelow to beat Psycho Sid & Tatanka in the main event.

Bret Hart gained revenge on Jerry “The King” Lawler after two years by defeating him in a “Kiss My Foot” match.
