King of the Ring Flashback: How Much Does This Guy Weigh? (1994)
Announcers aren’t supposed to steal the show, but it happened twice in World Wrestling Federation history.
The first time was at Royal Rumble 92, when Bobby “The Brain” Heenan went through a roller coaster of emotions.
Ric Flair emerged at No. 3 for the Royal Rumble (shock), was constantly targeted by dangerous enemies (terror), and finally won the WWF title after an amazing 60-minute performance (elation).
The other landmark announcing performance came at King of the Ring 94 for all the wrong reasons.
WHO IS ART DONOVAN?
That’s what most WWF fans were asking when Art Donovan joined Gorilla Monsoon and Randy Savage on commentary. Old-school football fans recognized him as a Hall of Fame defensive tackle for the Baltimore Colts.
Donovan called the entire show without knowing who anybody was or what was going on.
“How much does this guy weigh?” he would ask, ignoring the ring announcer. His hilariously clueless performance must have been frustrating for Gorilla and the Macho Man.
However, he somehow made the wrestlers look like a million bucks, saying that Owen Hart and Tatanka were like “linebackers” and The 1-2-3 Kid was like “a boxer.”
Donovan also marveled at Yokozuna’s massive size, even though WWF fans were used to him by that time.
THE KING OF HARTS
Like his brother one year earlier, Owen Hart won the King of the Ring tournament. He beat Tatanka, 1-2-3 Kid, and Razor Ramon to capture the crown.
Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart attacked Razor to help Owen win.
Earlier in the night, Neidhart appeared in Bret Hart’s corner for the WWF title match between Bret and Diesel. Neidhart attacked Diesel to save Bret from losing the title.
After the match, Shawn Michaels and Diesel beat up Bret, but Neidhart walked away.
When “The Anvil” helped Owen become king, everyone realized that he was only keeping the title on Bret so that Owen could win it from his brother.
ONE MORE KING
Jerry “The King” Lawler wrestled in the main event against “Rowdy” Roddy Piper. Both men were in their 40s, so they did more work with their mouths before the match than they did in the ring.
Piper won the match with a back suplex.
The Headshrinkers (Samu & Fatu) retained the WWF tag team title, overcoming the massive team of Crush & Yokozuna.
