Kelsey Plum Didn’t Hold Back, Calling Autograph Hounds “Weird”

“Autograph Hounds.” For those of you who’ve never heard of this phrase, it can be defined as; “people who actively seek out and obtain autographs, often from celebrities or public figures, with the primary goal of selling them for profit.” They sit in the most unusual places (airports, behind arenas, hotels, etc.), with binders filled with memorabilia, hoping that someone famous will sign them so they can make a quick buck.

They are the absolute WORST! The last time a hound-related situation caught fire on the internet was the time when Red Sox prospect Roman Anthony had to leave a game hiding in a laundry cart. But now? It’s Los Angeles Sparks G Kelsey Plum, who spoke the TRUTH by calling what they were doing “weird.”

I mean COME ON; I can’t be the only fan who thinks this is weird, right? Sure; these two individuals weren’t rude to Kelsey, like some of these “hounds” can be. They didn’t yell at her, touch her, or demanded her to sign multiple cards for them. They were even nice enough to just say “can I get at least one signature? You can even sign it to me” after she hit them with the “weird” comment.

But STILL; the act of waiting outside of a WNBA team’s hotel looking for autographs, just so can make a quick buck? That’s sketchy to the HIGHEST DEGREE! That is one of those moves that SPRINGS UP red flags all over the place.

Not only that; the CONTEXT that Kelsey’s teammate, Dearica Hamby, brought to the situation DID NOT help the case for these two men. AT ALL!

THAT…..that is some stalker-level shenanigans right there. I don’t care how you paint it, or what words you want to use; the fact that these two still SHOWED UP after the team switched hotels is VERY, VERY CREEPY! It’s something that, if we’re being honest, should be investigated by the authorities. But we all know that will never happen.

It’s not a great look. But the problem here though……is that some people on the internet don’t understand what’s going on here. When they watch this clip, all they see is a ‘public figure’ that’s insulting some fans. They don’t realize that “fans” like this…..they’re really in it for the money. They’re really in it for the paycheck at the end of the day, and not because they actually like the player in question.

It’s really sad what people have turned “autograph seeking” into nowadays. Real fans; they get autographs by running into a player on the street, or by trying to sneak courtside before the game starts. They don’t have BUNDLES AND BUNDLES of items that need to be signed, and extra markers just in case the ink runs out. They DON’T stalk them at the airport, or outside where they’re staying, to try and ambush them for a pic or a signature.

They’re just in it for the moment, and so they can have something to cherish for the rest of their lives.

Now in the end, to these men……please just stop what you’re doing! This is not ok! Kelsey was 1000% right when she called your actions “weird,” and I hope you take that as a wake-up call to get your acts together. But in the end, as always….what do I know? I’m just a guy from the Midwest, with a beer and a laptop, trying to make sense of this world.
