Josh Jung Delivers Three-Run Walk Off Home Run As Rangers Down Yanks 8-5
Entering play tonight, there was one MLB team without a comeback win of 3 or more runs this season.
When tonight’s MLB action concluded, there were zero.
Josh Jung blasted a three-run walk-off home run in the 10th inning to help the Rangers claim an 8-5 comeback win over the New York Yankees on Monday night at Globe Life Field.
“I think it’s one of our most impressive wins,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said.
“With what we went through on the trip, and I’m sure they were a little tired today getting in late, they didn’t get down after getting down three runs…”.
After starter Patrick Corbin struggled, allowing three runs in the game’s first two innings while facing 15 batters in that span, the Texas offense picked him up, putting up a four-spot in the second inning.
The inning was highlighted by a pair of former Yankees farmhands as Josh Smith ripped a single up the middle to get the Rangers on the board and Ezequiel Duran laced a two-RBI base hit to tie the game at three.
Later in the inning, Yankees starter Max Fried fired a pickoff attempt into center field with the bases loaded, allowing Jonah Heim to score from third and giving the Rangers the lead.
Following a short outing from Corbin, Jon Gray took over, and despite allowing a two-run go-ahead home run to Giancarlo Stanton in his first inning of work, he was able to dial in and give the Rangers five innings with just the two runs allowed.
“He [got better as the game went on] really with the command and everything. [He] made the 0-1 mistake, a fastball not where he wanted to put it, and it left the ballpark, but he kept his composure, and there he was pitching deep in the ballgame; he hasn’t been there in a while. I think he got a little tired, but it seemed like his location got better; he was throwing and hitting his spots, and he gave us some outs, which we needed to keep it close and give us a chance. Anything can happen in a one-run ballgame”.
Trailing by that same 5-4 score in the 9th inning, Joc Pederson came up and delivered a huge pinch-hit, game-tying home run for just his 3rd home run and 7th RBI of the season.
“I think there was a lot of excitement, a lot of built-up aggression and anger from a long season, it’s been,” Pederson said.
After Pederson gave the Rangers newfound life, newly acquired Danny Coulombe came in and got a huge 1-6-3 double play, securing a scoreless 10th inning that would eventually earn him a win.
With two outs in the bottom of the 10th, the Yankees intentionally walked Wyatt Langford and chose to pitch to Jung, who belted a home run, marking his third career walk-off plate appearance.
“He’s just got a great look about him,” Bochy said when speaking about Jung. “We missed him when he was down with that calf because he was swinging so well. He got good swings off tonight, it’s good to have him back in the lineup, of course, what he did there at the end, it’s good to have him back in the lineup”.
