Indy Wrestling Mania: Sabu Retires After Barbed-Wire Victory
Sabu didn’t accept his induction into the Indy Wrestling Hall of Fame last year, but he retired on his own terms last night.
In the main event of Joey Janela’s Spring Break 9 in Las Vegas, the hardcore legend defeated Janela in a barbed-wire match.
The Sandman made a cameo appearance during the brawl, which also included Sabu’s former manager, Bill Alfonso.
After the match, Janela presented Sabu with his Hall of Fame plaque.
Game Changer Wrestling’s Spring Break show is a highlight of the overstuffed lineup of independent shows that take place during WrestleMania weekend.
Ricky Morton’s son Kerry interrupted the “Senior Scramble” match that also included Robert Gibson of the Rock & Roll Express.
Ricky gave his son a Canadian Destroyer, and all of the seniors powerbombed Kerry onto a door for the pin.
Atticus Cogar saved his GCW career by defeating Fuego Del Sol, who was forced to unmask. Fuego also removed his boots, which usually indicates retirement.
BLOODSPORT
Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport XIII was another big event. The former UFC champion invited the combatants for a night of no-rope brawls that cannot end with a pinfall.
Gabe Kidd defeated Barnett in the main event. He continued his strong weekend at Spring Break by defeating former GCW champion Mance Warner.
Natalya Neidhart led a crew of WWE wrestlers into Bloodsport. She defeated Miyu Yamashita by submission to the sharpshooter.
WWE stars Karrion Kross, Pete Dunne, and Shayna Baszler also competed at Bloodsport, along with NXT wrestlers Karmen Petrovic, Charlie Dempsey, and Tavion Heights.
WRESTLECON SUPERSHOW
Eric “Butterbean” Esch competed at Wrestlecon Supershow at the age of 58. He battled Minoru Suzuki (56) to a double-countout.
The special referee was former UFC champion Dan “The Beast” Severn (66).
Other Supershow results included Matt Riddle over Matt Makowski; and Mickie James over Maki Itoh.
