Ice Cold to Red Hot: Cleveland Guardians Reach 50-50 Mark By Defeating Baltimore Orioles

The Cleveland Guardians have pulled a Mark Twain.

“Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.”

Losing 10 games in a row tested the faith of the team’s most loyal fans, but the Guardians have turned the season around with a 10-2 hot streak.

Last night’s 6-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles at Progressive Field gave the Guardians a 50-50 record.

THANK YOU, JOEY

Joey Cantillo needed 95 pitches to get through five innings, but you can’t argue with the results.

Cantillo (2-0) had a no-hitter through four innings. He gave up two hits and one run, walking four and striking out five.

Erik Sabrowski and Matt Festa gave up one run each, but Cade Smith and Emmanuel Clase handled the final two innings.

Clase picked up his 22nd save and lowered his ERA to 2.80.

WAIT FOR IT …

Jose Ramirez blasted a high fastball for his 21st homer of the season in the first inning off Baltimore starter Brandon Young (0-5).

Kyle Manzardo added an RBI single in the third.

Baltimore scored in the fifth when Jacob Stallings grounded into a double play.

We’ve had to wait all season to say it, but here it comes …

“No RBI for you!”

Manzardo increased Cleveland’s lead to 3-1 on a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

YOU AGAIN?

In the sixth, Ramon Laureano homered for Baltimore for the second game in a row.

Why? Because he used to play for Cleveland. Let’s call it the Will Benson Rule.

The Guardians went ahead 5-2 in the sixth on RBI singles by Brayan Rocchio and Angel Martinez.

Baltimore scored in the seventh on a single by Jackson Holliday, but Rocchio got the run back in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice bunt to score Nolan Jones.

LET’S KEEP IT GOING

Cleveland will face Baltimore in Game 3 of the four-game series tonight at 6:40.

Slade Cecconi (5-4, 3.84 ERA) will start for Cleveland against Zach Eflin (6-5, 5.95) for the Orioles.
