Gavin Williams, Powerful Bats Lead Cleveland Guardians Past Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies rolled into Cleveland with Bryce Harper, Nick Castellanos, and Kyle Schwarber leading a powerful offensive attack.

Gavin Williams wasn’t afraid.

He struck out eight Phillies in five innings as the Guardians won the series opener 6-0 on Friday night at Progressive Field.

Williams matched up with Philadelphia’s Aaron Nola, who has been a consistent winner over the years but is off to a 1-6 start.

Kyle Manzardo blasted a 411-foot homer to center field in the fourth to put Cleveland in the lead.

Angel Martinez increased the lead to 3-0 with a two-run homer in the fifth to score Gabriel Arias.

Before the inning ended, Santana drove in Steven Kwan with a groundout.

PROTECT THE LEAD

Tim Herrin and Hunter Gaddis kept the Phillies off the scoreboard in the sixth and seventh innings. Gaddis has an ERA of 0.60.

Cleveland pumped up the lead to 6-0 in the seventh on an RBI groundout by Daniel Schneemann and a solo homer by Jose Ramirez.

The Guardians’ MVP is hitting .278 with six homers and 18 RBI. Even without Ramirez going on a hot streak, Cleveland is 23-15.

That’s good for second place in the AL Central Division, just 2½ games behind the red-hot Detroit Tigers.

The six-run cushion allowed manager Stephen Vogt to rest Cade Smith and Emmanuel Clase. Michael Festa pitched the last two innings to complete the shutout.

KEEP IT GOING

Game 2 of the series is set for 6:10 p.m. today. Tanner Bibee (3-2) will start for the Guardians against Ranger Suarez for Philadelphia.
