Gavin Williams Narrowly Misses No-Hitter as Cleveland Guardians Sweep New York Mets
Gavin Williams was two outs away from Cleveland’s first no-hitter in 44 years.
Juan Soto blasted a home run to ruin the no-hitter and shutout. Williams faced two more batters before leaving to a standing ovation from the New York Mets fans.
Hunter Gaddis recorded the final out, and the Guardians beat the Mets 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Citi Field.
Cleveland has now swept the Houston Astros and the Mets on the road.
Ten years ago, the Cleveland Indians’ Carlos Carrasco also came within one out of a no-hitter.
The last one for Cleveland was Len Barker’s perfect game in 1981.
Williams walked four and struck out six while dominating the Mets’ high-priced lineup. He threw 126 pitches in his quest for baseball history.
LONG-BALL TIME
David Fry hit a solo home run in the second inning. While he’s still hitting .175, Fry is improving his power game. He is up to six homers.
Angel Martinez also went deep with a two-run shot in the third inning to score Steven Kwan. That was the 10th homer for Martinez.
Gabriel Arias extended the Guardians’ lead to 4-0 with a triple in the sixth inning to score Carlos Santana.
CHASING THE TIGERS
Detroit lost again, so Cleveland reduced the Tigers’ lead to six games in the AL Central Division. The Guardians are 1½ games behind the Yankees for the last wild card spot.
After a day off, the Guardians will face the Chicago White Sox on Friday night. Tanner Bibee (7-9) will face former Guardian Aaron Civale (3-6).
