From The IL To The Best Starters In Baseball
Last season, Nathan Eovaldi, Tyler Mahle, and Jacob deGrom combined to throw just 194 innings.
Coming into the 2024 season, the Rangers expected a “rotation line change” when several of their top starters came back from injury to push them into the playoffs to defend their title.
However, that wasn’t the case as Texas found themselves out of contention by the time the likes of deGrom and Mahle came back and eventually finished with a 78-84 record.
After a full offseason with no restrictions for deGrom and Mahle and the Rangers resigning Eovaldi to 3 year $75 million contract, the results have been more than Texas could have possibly dreamed of.
Entering play on Tuesday, Mahle, Eovaldi, and deGrom rank 4th, 5th, and 8th in the American League in ERA, respectively.
Despite an offense that has been shaky at times this season, the trio has combined for a 13-4 record in 17 decisions.
Being featured back to back to back in the rotation, the Rangers trio of aces have combined to give Texas a front end of the rotation capable of winning every series.
“We all talk a lot in between, starts] deGrom said of the rotation after eight shutout innings against the Houston Astros on Thursday.
“Everyone is kinda watching what everybody’s doing, so if they see something, whether it’s scouting report or something looks a little bit off, just saying whatever comes to our mind, so take it or leave it, and try to go out there and just try to keep rolling out there”.
As a whole. The Rangers rotation has an American League low 2.83 ERA . That is the lowest mark through 48 games of a season in franchise history.
“I’ve had some good staffs,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said last week. “They’re right up there. The numbers will tell you that with what they’re doing.”
With the Rangers sitting at just 25-23 with an offense just now starting to rebound, it’s hard not to wonder where Texas would be without their rotation performance.
Despite that, it’s easy to see that if the offense continues to trend upward, the rotation play could lead the Rangers to be one of the best all-around teams in baseball.
