Early-Season MLB Trade Targets in 2025
The MLB season is well underway and teams are beginning to round into form.
The calendar might have just turned to May but it is never too early to look at potential trade deadline targets for many teams around the league.
Below, check out some players who might be moved at the deadline — or even before.
2025 MLB Trade Targets
Sandy Alcantara, Miami Marlins: The bottom line is, this former Cy Young award winner is going to be traded. The Marlins have all but made this known. Alcantara is going to be one of the top pitchers available at the trade deadline. At 29 years old, Alcantara is under control for two more years with a club option in 2027 for $21 million. For a top-end pitcher, this is a bargain.
Dylan Cease, San Diego Padres: The Padres have to move a pitcher, right? It has become more obvious that the Padres want to hold onto Michael King. This leaves Dylan Cease as the option to move at the deadline. If San Diego wants to win, it makes sense to keep Cease but all options are open.
Luis Robert Jr., Chicago White Sox: Robert was one major trade target this winter but the White Sox decided to deal Garrett Crochet first. Now, the White Sox can move the slugger once the season gets away. He struggled in 2024 with injuries and at the plate, hitting jut .274. He is a strong defender and has the potential to hit 35+ home runs.
Tyler Anderson, Los Angeles Angels: At 35 years old, Anderson is a veteran lefty that can provide insurance for a contender in either league. He is owed $13 million in 2025, which is the final year of his deal. He will not be expensive and could be the perfect rental for a team in need of starting depth.
Josh Bell, Washington Nationals: The Nationals are a young, up-and-coming team. Bell does not fit the bill for the future. He is no stranger to being traded. It has happened each of the last three years at the deadline.
Steven Matz, St. Louis Cardinals: The Cardinals have a chance to be big-time sellers at the deadline. Right now, Matz is performing like a pitcher that is trying to build up his value. The left-hander is off to a red-hot start and could bring some attention in the middle of the summer.
