Eovaldi Goes 5 Scoreless, As Offense “Different” in Rangers 6-0 Shutout Over Orioles

Before going on the injured list, Nathan Eovaldi looked like a slam dunk to be an All-Star alongside ace Jacob deGrom.

However, after missing exactly a month and going just three innings and giving up as many runs in his return, it appeared Eovaldi lost some of his mojo that he had to start the season.

Whatever stride Eovaldi may have lost in the last month-plus, he seemed to gain back on Wednesday night at Globe Life Field.

Eovaldi fired five scoreless allowing just two hits while striking out five, in the Rangers 6-0 series-clinching victory over the Orioles.

“I felt good, I felt strong towards the end,” Eovaldi said. “I made a few mechanical adjustments from the last outing to this one, and I felt like they helped out a lot”.

After the strong outing today, Eovaldi’s season ERA dropped to 1.75, marking the 2nd lowest ERA by a Rangers starter through a pitcher’s first 14 starts of a season (Rick Honeycutt, 1.49, 1983).

“Terrific job by Nate,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said. “He looked more in sync tonight, I thought. When he got deeper in counts, he made pitches when he had to. Five solid innings and he’ll get an extra day [off], so that’s a good thing.

It also didn’t hurt that Eovaldi got a season-high six runs of support as the Rangers offense carried over its strong performance from last night, putting up a combined 16 runs over the course of the two games.

Texas got a huge two-out swing from Marcus Semien, who launched a three-run home run in the second, Ezequiel Duran, who flipped a two-RBI single into center field in the third, and Corey Seager ripped a solo shot in the 5th, giving the Rangers all the offense they needed.

Despite having offensive outbursts in the past, according to Bochy, this run feels a little bit different.

“It does feel different, just the vibe, the confidence feels like it’s growing with this offense. We’re hitting with runners in scoring position and doing some little things really well, running the bases, little things like that. When you get guys on base and put a little pressure on the opposing team, eventually things happen,n and we’re doing a better job of getting guys on base”.
