Domi Powers Leafs Past Senators, Leafs Take 2-0 Series Lead
Game Two of the Battle of Ontario proved to be a tougher test for the Maple Leafs, but backed by a Max Domi OT winner, the Leafs took a 2-0 series lead headed to Ottawa.
Each of the core four forwards scored a point, with John Tavares being the man with the goal and assist. The Toronto Maple Leafs are 10-0 as a franchise when they go up 2-0 in a playoff series after two home victories. Anthony Stolarz stopped 26 of 28 in the overtime win.
Early on, the Leafs were all over the Senators. Winning puck battles, beating them to lose pucks, everything. The Leafs continued their dominance on the Senators with an early goal from Morgan Rielly. Rielly redirected a centering pass from William Nylander, and it just trickled past Ullmark and over the goal line for the icebreaker for game 2.
Stolarz kept it 1-0 5 minutes into the period when he sprung forward to stop Senators forwardTim Stutzle alone in front of the net on the Senator powerplay.
Not long after Toronto killed the Ottawa powerplay, the Maple Leafs found themselves on a powerplay of their own. Not long into the man advantage, John Tavares scored after his shot from the bottom of the right circle banked off a Senators defender’s skate at the top of the crease. Another powerplay goal for Toronto doubles their lead in the first period early.
Brady Tkachuk scored in the second period to cut the Toronto lead to 2-1, after his cross-crease pass deflected off Brandon Carlo’s skate into the back of the net. In the third, Adam Gaudette scored to tie the game with 6 minutes left in the period. The goal came off of Ottawa’s first shot of the period.
As the game went to overtime, Leafs fans couldn’t help but be worried. The second and third period were rough. Toronto was a lot slower, they were a lot less aggressive, and they were letting Ottawa control the puck and control play for the majority of the period. “We didn’t make plays,” Berube said of the Leafs’ play in the period. “We just looked like we were protecting the lead.”
In overtime, both teams came out hot. Toronto had a couple good chances while Ottawa was continuing their strong play from the previous two periods. Just over 3 minutes into the first overtime frame, Max Domi took a drop pass from defender Simon Benoit and darted into the slot to beat the goaltender Linus Ullmark with a wrist shot in the top left corner to seal the game. Domi has been less effective offensively this season than many wished he would be, but he finally did what coach Craig Berube has wanted him to do all season: shoot the puck. When the puck leaves his stick, good things come from it. Quality chances, and even sometimes goals.
“Obviously a great play,” Berube said. “[Simon] Benoit made a great play on it.”
Toronto heads up to Kanata to face-off against the Senators for the two game set at the Canadian Tire Centre on Thursday, and Saturday. By the end of the week, the Maple Leafs have the chance to do what many never thought could happen: sweep the series. If Toronto can take even one of the two games, they’ll head back to Toronto to Leafs faithful to try and seal the deal that is the Battle of Ontario.
