Did We Just Witness The Breakout Of Marcus Semien?

On Wednesday night, the Texas Rangers felt like they hit a new low after a 2-0 shutout loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

However, despite the entire team’s struggles, no player exemplified the state of the team more than Marcus Semien.

“By late May, Semien was enduring one of the toughest starts of any regular starter in MLB history.”

Entering a series against the red-hot St Louis Cardinals, Semien and the Rangers had their backs against the wall.

Friday night, Semien stepped to the plate in the second inning with Texas leading 1-0 and laced a single into left field.

Just that base hit alone had to have felt like a relief, but in his next two ABs, Semien would find the outfield with base hits again.

“In the 8th, with Texas up 9-0, Semien turned on an inside sinker and launched it into the left-field seats.”

Semien’s hot hitting didn’t end when Friday’s game ended, as on Saturday, he slashed a base hit and worked a tough walk in the Rangers 2-0 loss.

On Sunday, Semien put forth a two-hit and two-walk day at the plate, capping off a historic series amid his struggles.

Finishing the weekend 7-8 with three walks, six runs scored, three driven in, and three stolen bases, Semien’s series totals marked the first time in MLB this season that a player has put up those totals in a three-game span.

With the strong three-game showing, Semien’s OPS climbed an astonishing 77 points from .484 to .561, and his batting average went from .173 to .201, a 28-point increase.

Semien’s weekend wasn’t just a statistical surge, but rather a reminder of how central he is to the Rangers offensive identity.

“Every day is a new day in the Major Leagues,” Semien said after Friday night’s win. “We’ll game plan for the next guy and try to execute as best we can and see what we come out with. If we capitalize on any pitcher’s mistakes, we’re going to be in a better spot.

“I think [pressure], that’s all outside noise. It weighs on us, it’s outside noise, at least to me. When we come in here and execute, do our job and do it well, we’re a better team.”
