Detroit Tiger Mock Trade for Eugenio Suarez

Trade MLB has created a mock trade that would include Arizona exchanging 34 year old Slugger Eugenio Suarez in exchange for Jace Jung, Dylan Smith, Jaden Hamm. Next we will break down the three young players and weigh the options of a trade of this magnitude.

Jace Jung is a former top 5 prospect out of Texas Tech who blazed his way to through the minor league system stockpiling a ton of walks and hitting for power. as a second basemen. After Detroit extended Colt Keith long term he transitioned to 3rd base. He made his debut in the second half of the year and contributed as the everyday third basemen on a Tiger’s team that made the Postseason. After having surgery on his elbow during the offseason, he showed minimal improvement at the plate from his rookie season, and has been in Toledo for most of this year. His defense has taken several strides but he hasn’t turned the corner as a hitter as of yet. He’s still only 24 years old with a potential to be a major league caliber hitter.

Dylan Smith is a former 3rd round pick back in 2021. He is a starter whose made the full transition as a reliever. His fastball-slider combo has proven to be more potent in much smaller doses. He pitched well early on in Erie and after one appearance in Toledo was quickly promoted to Detroit soon after. Smith has been utilized in  low leverage situations in Detroit, adn has shown that he can induce weak contact, and keep the ball on the ground. In 7 games at the Major League level he is 1-0 with a 1.38 ERA, and a 0.95 WHiP. He is currently the 18th ranked prospect in the Tiger’s system.

Jaden Hamm is the Tiger’s #1 pitching prospect and 7th overall in the Tiger’s system. He was second to only Jackson Jobe, who has since then transitioned out of prospect status. Hamm burst on the scene in 2024 after coming into the year unranked. He finished the season with a 5-4 record with an impressive 2.64 ERA. He dominated the strike zone putting whiffing 122 batters and only walking 31 in 99 innings pitches. He has good command of his fastball and curveball, and is still working to develop his slider and changeup to round out his arsenal. So far this year he has struggled making the transition to the Double A level. His current ERA sits at 4.26 in 13 games starter.

Former Tiger Eugenio Suarez has expressed interest in finishing his career where he started it. Eugenio had a monster first half, slugging 36 homers and 86 RBIs. He already has a pair of 2 home-run games to kick off the second half of the year. Although he is severely below average defender, he more than makes that up with his top notch offensive production. The Tigers have yet to find an everyday option at 3rd base, and have expressed interest in fulfilling that role with somebody more solidified. With Suarez’ being on expiring contract, he would be a considered a  rental unless there was a mutual agreement to work on an extension. Suarez would be seeking a sizable AAV for multiple years given the season he is currently having. This would be deemed a risk at his age of 34, but there is no indication that his performance will falter. His body has held up quite well, over his last 4 seasons he has logged an average of 153 games per year.

Overall, the Tigers would be giving up considerable value in the 3 players but Suarez would be a necessary risk to gamble on given the team is ready to contend for a World Series right now. He provides to the team a big bopper in the middle in the lineup that will supply protection for the Tiger’s young producers in Riley Greene, Spencer Torkelson, and Kerry Carpenter. If they lock him in for a few more years, that will sweeten the deal even more. The team obtains a top bat on the market without giving up any of their top 5 prize prospects.
