Detroit Pistons Sign Duncan Robinson
Duncan Robinson opted out of the final year of his $20 million deal with Miami to become a Free Agent. The Pistons had been reported to be expressing interest in Robinson and on July 1st they completed a Sign-and-Trade to send Simone Fontechio and his expiring $8 million contract to Miami in exchange for Robinson. Duncan will join his former college roommate in Caris Levert in an effort to shore up the backcourt on the second unit.
Robinson goes down in Miami Heat History as their most successful 3 point shooter converting 1202 long-range jumpers throughout his career. In 2024, Robinson shot 39% from beyond the arc and 87% from the free-throw line. He has a vast repertoire of ways to score the ball, but the most unique skillset amongst Detroit’s current roster is his ability to score off of dribble handoffs and screens. He is is an above average passer and can manufacture opportunities for his teammates. On the other hand, he is a major liability on the defensive end. He provides little to no value on that side of the ball.

Overall, this move shores up any concerns about 3 point production they would have regarding the exit of Malik Beasley. Keep in mind, the Pistons will be getting back a healthy, and steadily improving Jaden Ivey who will man the minutes taken up by Tim Hardaway Jr. who has departed to Denver this offseason. The Pistons successfully flipped the expiring contract of Fontecchio, a player who provided little value this past year, into one that has still shown he can be a factor for a highly competitive team.
Trajan Langdon has done a good job of surrounding the core with complimentary players without crippling the team with major commitments that would stagnate their future. The details of Robinson’s contract reads that his first year is fully guaranteed, the second is partially guaranteed, and his final year is fully non-guaranteed. This provides Detroit with flexibility in the event they want to go a different route later on down the line. Detroit still possesses their $14 million mid-level exception, which they may look to address the role of rim protection along the front court. On June 28th it was reported that the Pistons have the best odds to snag Bol Bol in free agency. Bol Bol was almost a Piston back in 2022, but failed the voiding the trade involving Rodney Mcguder.
