Detroit Pistons Sign Caris Levert
Just a day after the announcement that Malik Beasley is under investigation for betting on NBA games it appears the Pistons have transition to a secondary option to shore up the scoring on the second unit. Detroit and Caris Levert have agreed on a 2 year deal totaling $29 million.
Levert is a crafty scorer that can fill it up in a multitude of ways. He operates well with the ball in his hands, creating opportunities for himself and others. Levert has primarily come off the bench throughout his career, but has averaged around 28 minutes a night. He is a 6β5 wing with a 6β11 wingspan enabling him to reek havoc in the passing lanes and manufacture turnovers on defense. Levert is a player that has been linked to Detroit in the past, and given the circumstances Detroit was faced with, the table was set for the two parties to come to an agreement.

As stated earlier, Levert is comfortable coming off the bench, but he certainly has the ability start in a pinch. He has the capacity to initiate the offense taking some pressure off the lead guards when necessary . While throughout his career he has always been known to be a streaky shooter, his uncanny ability to draw free throws makes him a valuable asset, even when heβs not knocking down outside shots. He is also a dangerous weapon in transition. His scoring frequency was 28% by way of transition opportunities. This is an intriguing statistic given the Pistons style of play of pushing the ball for fast break opportunities. Levert shot a respectable 37% from 3 this past season, but overall finished with the lowest numbers since his rookie season in points per game with 12.1, and minutes with 24.9. The emergence of Ty Jerome as a bonafide sixth man may have limited his looks. He will have the definite green light coming off the bench in Detroit.
The signing of Levert was a solid pivot from the initial plan to resign Beasley. While his outside shooting and pales in comparison to Beasley, Levert will certainly make up some of that void with defense, athleticism and playmaking. The Pistons have addressed their front court depth bringing back Paul Reed, but look for Detroit to be active in the sign and trade market in order to continue boost the scoring output.
