Detroit is looking to turn the Page on a Bad Stretch of Games
The Detroit Tigers were able to snap a major losing streak on Sunday to avoid being swept by the first place Toronto Blue Jays. The team erupted for 7 runs in the bottom of the 8th after only only managing to reach base in one inning previous to that. The win comes large in part to Gleyber Torres who contributed 4 RBIs including an opposite field 3 run home-run in the 3rd inning. Parker Meadows had a breakout game going 2 for 3 and scoring 2 runs in the game. Jack Flaherty, who has been one of of the bigger disappointments for the team this year went 6 scoreless innings and added in 7 strikeouts in a winning effort.

The Tigers had lost 6 games in a row dating back to last Sunday and 12 of their last 13. A stretch where they ranked close to last in every statistical category including batting average, runs, ERA, etc. The Tigers are hoping to put all that behind them with the trade deadline looming, and 55 games remaining in the regular season. Detroit has seen their large 15 game lead cut in half over a short period of time. They now lead the Cleveland Guardians by only 8 games. Cleveland has been rumored to taking calls on star players Steven Kwan and Emanuel Class, but given the current good fortune as of late they may think twice about selling.
It’s difficult to quite pinpoint what the cause of the Tiger’s misfortune might be, but the return of Kerry Carpenter in the middle of the lineup should give them an added boost to a lineup that has struggled to contend with the opposing team. Tarik Skubal spun yet another great start on Saturday, but the lineup could only muster up 2 Jake Rogers hits in a losing effort. The Tigers were 7-14 in Carpenter’s absence.
The Tigers welcome in the Arizona Diamondbacks who have already began to sell off players most notably their first base slugger Josh Naylor. Detroit will get a nice look at Eugenio Suarez who is #1 on a lot of team’s Christmas list as far as premiere power hitters available at the deadline. The Tigers still have a sizable lead in the Central and have the 25th weakest strength of schedule down the stretch according to Tankathon with their opponents winning percentage being .485 the remainder of the way.
