Daniel Schneemann Powers Cleveland Guardians Past Toronto with Late-Inning Bombs

Daniel Schneeman is a handy player to have on the Cleveland Guardians. He can play second base, third base, and even center field.

Or he can carry the entire team to victory with a solo homer in the eighth and a grand slam in the ninth.

The “Super Schneemann” version showed up on Saturday, driving in all of Cleveland’s runs in a 5-3 win over the Blue Jays in Toronto.

BLUE JAYS BUILD LEAD

Bo Bichette hit a solo homer for Toronto in the first inning, breaking a nearly year-long drought without a homer. His father, Dante, never had that problem.

Cleveland starter Gavin Williams walked Nathan Lukes with the bases loaded in the third inning, giving Toronto a 2-0 lead.

Williams only lasted four innings, despite striking out nine batters. Kolby Allard (2-0) pitched the next four innings, giving up a sacrifice fly to Toronto catcher Tyler Heineman.

Meanwhile, the Guardians couldn’t generate any offense against Blue Jays starter Kevin Gausman. He pitched six shutout innings, giving up a hit and a walk while racking up nine strikeouts of his own.

LOOK … UP IN THE SKY!

Schneemann finally got the Guardians on the board with a solo homer in the eighth.

Cleveland loaded the bases in the ninth on a single by Steven Kwan and walks by Carlos Santana and Bo Naylor.

Schneemann came through again with a 395-foot grand slam to propel Cleveland to its first lead of the game.

Emmanuel Clase finished off the Blue Jays in the ninth for his sixth save.

The rubber match of the three-game series will start at 1:37 p.m. today. Tanner Bibee (2-2) will start for Cleveland against the Blue Jays’ Bowden Francis (2-4).
