Cy Young Winner Tarik Skubal Blanks Cleveland Guardians 5-0

Well, it was fun while it lasted.

The Cleveland Guardians had won four games in a row, including three straight against the first-place Detroit Tigers.

Then they ran into Tarik Skubal, last year’s American League Cy Young Award winner.

The 28-year-old lefty delivered one of the best performances of his career as the Tigers defeated the Guardians 5-0 on Sunday.

Skubal fired a two-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts and zero walks. It was the first complete game of his career.

According to amazing baseball source NotGaetti, Skubal set a record for fewest pitches (94) thrown in a complete game with 13 or more strikeouts.

The previous record belonged to Clayton Kershaw, who threw 99 in 2017. Kershaw threw four other complete games with at least 13 strikeouts!

GUARDIANS OFFENSE

Jose Ramirez singled. Will Wilson doubled.

TIGERS OFFENSE

Detroit scored all five of its runs in the fourth inning off Cleveland starter Logan Allen (2-3).

Zach McKinstry hit a two-run homer, his third of the season. Gleyber Torres hit a run-scoring double.

Andy Ibanez added an RBI single and scored on a throwing error by Allen.

Jakob Junis pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. Nic Enright made his major-league debut with two scoreless innings of his own.

THE DIVISION RACE

The Tigers are four games ahead of Cleveland and Minnesota (29-23). The Kansas City Royals are five games out of first place at 29-25.

Cleveland finished its road trip with a record of 4-6.

The Guardians will host both Los Angeles teams this week. The Dodgers will visit first on Monday night at 6:10.

Gavin Williams (4-2) will start for Cleveland against the Dodgers’ Yoshinobu Yamamoto (5-3).
