Could Matt Vierling Be on the Move?

Matt Vierling was acquired by the Detroit Tigers, as a part of a trade, in exchange for Gregory Soto and Kody Klemens. Thus far for Detroit, he has served as a durable player, that has the versatility to defend all over the outfield and at 3rd base. Vierling missed the 3 months of the year with a strained right rotator cuff. He returned on May 23rd, and after a weekend series, he landed back on the IL, returning on June 28th. In 83 plate appearances between Lakeland and Toledo he has struggled to get going at the plate. That trend has continued up in Detroit, managing only a slashline of .158/.298/.184

With the Tiger’s looking to strengthen their pitching staff, the 28 year old outfielder could be an appealing trade piece to a team looking for some versatility in the field who hits for good contact, that can run the bases well.

Vierling signed a 1 year $3 million deal in the offseason, and still has two years of team control left, before he is a Unrestricted Free Agent in 2028. His value alone wouldn’t yield much return, but he could be a nice add-on along with a mid-level prospect.

The Tigers for years have had a logjam in the outfield, and with the need to address other parts of the organization, they may look balance out their efforts by way of moving on from Vierling in the right situation.  The emergence of Javier Baez and Colt Keith as viable options at 3rd, has made Vierling’s ability to play at the hot corner is not so much of a importance. It also appears that the younger and physically gifted Parker Meadows will have a pretty decent size leash before Manager AJ Hinch decides to pivot a different direction in Center.

In the event the Tiger’s elect to move Vierling, it would open up at-bats for 25 year old Outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy Malloy who slugged 9 homeruns 8 homeruns last year and has shown the potential to be a run-producer in the brief opportunities that he’s had. His power numbers this year has dropped but his current slashline in an impressive .336/.486/.937. Vierling can play all 3 outfield positions at a high level and fields an average third-base. He also brings with him Postseason/World Series experience. Any team looking for those type of qualities will certainly be calling Scott Harris’ line with interest. The official trade deadline is on July 31st, so it shouldn’t be long before the first domino falls around the league.
