Could It Be Time For Bigger Questions To Be Answered?

The Texas Rangers have tried just about everything to get their struggling offense rolling.

It started with small lineup shakeups and players’ meetings, then it turned to bigger things. Countless changes of players, franchise heroes of the World Series run being moved to the very bottom of the order, and even mandatory batting practice enforced by Rangers President of Baseball Operations Chris Young, yet still nothing clicked.

Finally, on May 4th, the Rangers made the resounding choice to relieve offensive coordinator Donnie Ecker and hired Bret Boone just days later.

However, despite all of those measures, the Rangers still rank at or near the bottom of MLB in pretty much every major offensive statistical category.

Seemingly, all that’s left for the Rangers is to make some difficult decisions with players like Adolis Garcia and Marcus Semien, who are struggling mightily.

After managing just one hit in a shutout loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday, Rangers manager Bruce Bochy was asked straight up about playing time for guys really struggling.

“Yeah,” Bochy said when asked if the club has to consider meritocracy with certain struggling players. “You’ve gotta have days where you give them a break”.

Those decisions could be coming soon as Evan Carter appears set to go out on a rehab assignment this weekend, and with a potential return looming next week, the Rangers could be at full strength for the first time this season.

When Carter does return, he will join Alejandro Osuna, Wyatt Langford, and Garcia vying for regular playing time in the outfield. As of now, it’s not hard to look at that situation and see Garcia being the odd man out.

The same could be said for Semien, who is off to statistically one of the worst starts for an MLB starter in the league’s history.

Following the Rangers activation of Corey Seager and expectation to return to shortstop this weekend, that leaves Texas needing to once again find somewhere for Josh Smith to play.

Sure, the Rangers do have the DH spot open with Joc Pederson on the IL for the foreseeable future, but it’s a complicated position.

Osuna, Langford, and Carter are all too young to slide into that role with any sort of regularity, It’s unclear whether the Rangers would want to take Josh Smith’s defensive value away to make him a regular DH, and the results certnaly don’t back Garica or Semien getting regular AB’s there.

How Bochy decides to use the role when Carter comes back could tell us a lot about the direction of certain player’s playing time.

It seems that Garcia and Semien’s opportunities could be dwindling, something that not many people could have expected coming into this season. They’ll have to start showing results in what could be limited opportunities

At the end of the day, baseball is a performance-based game, and if expectations are not met, the Rangers have proven they are not scared of making the difficult decisions.
